Week 11 Blog Language and Literacy Development

This course has helped deepen my level of understanding for language and literacy development. My daughter, Caleigh, is near and dear to my heart. She is five years old and going to Kindergarten next year. Yay! However, she has struggled with her speech since she began to talk. This class has helped me so much not just from an educational standpoint, but also from a parent perspective on how to understand her language delays better. As a mom, I am always trying to help better her speech. The class resource Language development from theory to practice (2nd ed.) was a great book. I am now know the various milestones needed in order to have proper language development. Through this course it has made apparent why my daughter may have the speech delays. Over the years she has missed many milestones necessary for proper language development and growth. It has not only helped me in my personal situation, but as an educator, I will use this better understand the speech issues that my students struggle with.
One topic that I still have interest in is, are some language issues not correctable, even with proper interventions.  I wonder this because, as an educator, I see many students who receive speech services, but even after years and months they still have the language issues with no progress.

  1. You are absolutely correct this class is excellent for parents. Congrats on your daughter going to Kindergarten! I have a 5 month old and this class helped me learn the different stages that he must go through in order to have "proper" language development. As of now his speech aligns to the milestones however, if they begin to halt or he struggles I will now know and be able to address the problem. The topic of interest that chose is a very good question. I see it daily at my school and the children have and are meeting with the Speech Therapist, but some speech problems aren't corrected.
